Aim of the subject:
Phonetics (introduction to the most important pronunciation rules of the Russian language), transcription (system for recording pronunciation nuances). Interpreting poetic texts (on the basis of opera texts). Enunciation and literary comment.
Content: - Russian alphabet and phonemes; principles of phonetic transcription
- Emphasis in Russian words; un-emphasised vowels o and e
- Voiced and unvoiced consonants; pronunciation of consonants at the end of the word
- Palatalization of consonants
- Jotted vowels
- Functions of soft and hard signs
- Pronunciation of consonant groups (assimilation of consonants etc.)
- Russian pronunciation in singing; typical mistakes Learning outcomes:
On completion of the subject, students will:
- have learned the Russian alphabet
- know and are able to explain the main principles of Russian phonetics
- be able to correctly pronounce phonemes and phoneme groups
- be able to accurately read the lyrics of vocal pieces
- be able to phonetically transcribe Russian words
Assessment:
Non-differentiated assessment
The precondition for assessment in the end of the course is participation in at least half of the lectures. The assessment consists of a written test (phonetic transcription of words) and reading of an unknown poetic text (with a short preparation time). If necessary, students are also required to answer theoretical questions about the pronunciation rules.
Assessment criteria:
A positive assessment result is obtained by students who:
- have participated in at least half of the lectures
- know the Russian alphabet
- are able to accurately read a text assigned at the assessment
- are able to accurately transcribe words
- are able to explain the main principles of Russian phonetics
