Aim of the subject:
Introduction to the peculiarities of French pronunciation.
Learning the rules of pronunciation and their skilful usage in speaking and singing.
Mastering the skills of transcription.
Improving pronunciation skills through practical exercises.
Mastering the pronunciation of the works that the student needs to sing for his speciality lessons.
Learning the ability to manage in a real life situation to deal with any new French music score, reaching a professional level of French pronunciation by himself in a short time frame.
Content: French alphabet, the main rules of pronunciation and the principles
The pronunciation of front and back vowels (a, e, ö, o)
the pronunciation rules of closed and open vowels
Learning and practicing nasal vowels (a, o, ä, ö)
Learning and practicing semi-vowels and semi-consonants
Practical class including transcription exercises
Listening to, transcribing and reading well-known songs and arias from French composers as Fauré, Poulenc, Debussy, Bizet, Gounod, etc Learning outcomes:
The student :
- knows the main problems of French pronunciation;
- can use transcription signs, pronounces correctly, reads and sing a French piece; - can transcribe an unfamiliar text, can learn and sing it flawlessly.
Assessment:
Requirements:
- to transcribe and read unfamiliar lyrics taken from a famous French song or opera (approx. 15 lines)
- to pronounce a transcribed text (taken from the French song repertoire)
- to transcribe and read from an unfamiliar score (3-4 pages)
Assessment criteria:
The student passes the non-graded exam if she/he
- reads the texts, songs, dialogues, arias without mistakes.
- reads and sings the piece which is independently prepared at home
- transcribes an unknown song or aria
He/she can make mistakes only in case of an exceptional word or a rare form.
