Aim of the subject:  1. Understand the main points of messages related to areas of personal relevance and to topics of general interest, if stated clearly in the standard language. 2. Reading and understanding the main points of simple literary and non-literary texts, relating to areas of personal relevance and to topics of general interest written in an everyday language. 3. Interacting in simple situations of routine and participating in conversations about familiar topics of personal interest or pertinent to daily life 4. Describing and telling orally experiences and events related to topics family, of personal interest or pertaining to daily life 5. Writing short, simple and coherent texts on familiar topics of personal interest. 6. Demonstrating a good knowledge of the culture of the country. 7. Applying appropriate tools and study skills for learning the language.

Content: - A good knowledge of the rules of pronunciation, intonation and spelling
- An extensive knowledge of vocabulary and expressions
- An extensive knowledge of morphology and grammatical structures
- A good knowledge of the conditional tense in the present, two past tenses (passato prossimo vs Imperfetto) and the imperative tense.
- Knowledge on how to carry out research independently using various resources including ICT
- Awareness of the culture of the country or countries where the language is spoken
- Awareness of language learning strategies and own progress
Learning outcomes: 

Assessment:  A) Formative assessment evaluation: observation by the teacher, tests and self-assessment, grammar tasks, writing tasks. This assessment is based on the learning objectives set for each book unit.
B) Summative evaluation (arvestus) at the end of Semester 1: Multiple choice test and written production.
C) Summative evaluation at the end of Semester 2: listening, written comprehension, oral interaction, oral production and written production.

Assessment criteria:  Examination :
excellent (A) - excellent conversation skills, makes no grammatical mistakes.
very good (B) - good conversation skills, makes some
grammatical mistakes.
good (C) - conversation skills are satisfactory, but
needs guiding questions. Makes several grammatical mistakes.
satisfactory (D) - the student understands the questions, but when answering them makes incorrect sentences and uses poor vocabulary.
sufficient (A) - is not able to have a conversation, can hardly understand the questions, need several additional questions to have a dialogue.
