Aim of the subject:
The aim of the subject is to write and defend publicly a research thesis related to the field of cultural management. The research process aims at promoting the student´s critical thinking and generalizing skills, as well as argumentation capacities. Upon successful defense of the thesis, the student will be awarded Master´s degree.
(Minimum length of 15000 words, w/o appendixes). Content: The student must have completed the whole curricula to be able to access the defense. The student chooses a topic and a supervisor (PhD - suggested) and carries out a theoretical and practical research of the field, according to the topic chosen. He/she then presents the written thesis (with the agreement of the supervisor) one month before the oral defence and then defends the thesis during a 15 minute presentation and following question-answer session with the opponent an committee. Learning outcomes: Learning outcomes of the module. Upon completion of the module, the student will be able to: 1. Investigate practical and theoretical issues related to cultural management, and apply appropriate scientific methods. 2. Review results and make proposals for given research issues and problems. 3. Discuss in written form the methods, process and analysis results. 4. Present the thesis and its results verbally, and defend it in public. Assessment: Assessment is based on written thesis and public defense of the thesis, with a reveiwer appointed for each candidate. Thesis defense committee will decide the result in a closed meeting following public discussion. The oral presentation may change the grade upwards if the student demonstrates good discussion skills at the public defense, or vice versa. (approximately +/-one level) Assessment criteria: Grade 'A' or "excellent" - The master thesis is of an outstanding and particularly broad-based level of achievement. The research problem and question are excellently defined and hold high aspiration level. The thesis is based on an independent, critical and innovative research approach. The theoretical discussion elaborates well current research and discussion on the topic and is relevant to research the question. The discussion leads to the establishment of a excellent framework or to a model. The established framework guides the empirical work. The choice of research methodology is well-justified and the reliability and validity of the data are clearly validated. The student shows an ability to grasp demanding theoretical and methodological issues. The researcher is able to abstract the results from the data and to make conclusions. The student exhibits an ability to carry out competent empirical research The results are novel and managerially relevant and there is an excellent linkage to previous scientific discussion. The results are insightful and generalized beyond the observed data. The reporting is analytical and the approach is critical. The format of presentation is logical and the language is fluent and correct - The student produces new scientific knowledge publishable in refereed journals. - The research problem is theoretically, managerially and/or socially very significant Grade 'B' or "very good" - The master thesis shows a very high level of achievement. The research problem and question are very well defined and hold rather high aspiration level. The thesis is based on critical and through research approach. The theoretical discussion elaborates very well current research and discussion on the topic and is relevant to research the research question. The discussion leads to the establishment of a good framework or to a model. The established framework guides the empirical work. The format of presentation is logical and the language is fluent and correct Grade 'D' or "satisfactory" - The master thesis shows a sufficient level of achievement. The research problem is irrelevant or not well-justified and the research question is unclear. The theoretical discussion is not comprehensive and the relevant concepts are not clearly defined. The study has few scientific references; the list of references mostly consists of textbooks, magazines, course books and managerial reports. Thus the study is only remotely related to previous scientific discussion. The framework is less clear and formulated. The theoretical discussion and the empirical study are inadequately integrated. The methods and variables are not well-defined (so as to make it difficult to repeat the research). The reliability and validity of the data are not discussed. The work contains formal and/or contextual mistakes in tables, figures and/or in references. The conclusions are unclear and questionable. The formal presentation and language of the thesis need considerable improvement Grade 'E' or "sufficient" - The master thesis corresponds to the minimum required level. The thesis does not clearly present a research problem, it is irrelevant or not justified. The research questions are unclear or nonexistent. The relevant concepts are not defined and the theoretical discussion has major lacks in covering relevant literature or the theoretical chapter is not clearly distinguished from the empirical part. The study has hardly any scientific references; the list of references mostly consists of websites, textbooks, magazines, course books and managerial reports. The study does not build form previous scientific discussion at all. The theoretical discussion and the empirical study are not integrated or overlap. The methods and variables are not defined (so as to make it difficult to repeat the research) or do not contain clear justifications or are not described clearly. There are major lacks in the reliability and validity of the data . There are formal and/or contextual mistakes in tables, figures and/or in references. Conclusions are unclear and questionable. The thesis doesnt have almost any scientific nor practical value. The formal presentation and language of the thesis need considerable improvement.
