Aim of the subject:
The module takes a new perspective to cultural management focusing the societal challenges, reflecting on questions such as what is the role of art in solving societyäs grand challenges, using art in e.g. well being, city development etc. The focus is on building understanding and capability to manage interactions in between art and society understanding the current societal and ethical issues and concerns within. It takes a look at fundraising and sponsorship, stakeholder relations within the context of art. In addition a look into the legal constraints and enablers is made.
Content: The module "Cultural Management in the Context of Today" consists of lectures, presentations, case studies, visits to cultural institutions, group work and discussions, during which students gain knowledge about the cultural, societal and economic impact of cultural projects and institutions. The students have the opportunity to discuss ethical problems, expand upon ethical questions which are actual in society and make informed decisions. A special look is taken on fundraising and sponsorship as well as the legal context within art field. During the course the skill of learning is developed through reflections on one's values, vision, knowledge, action and stances. The students acquire knowledge about the use of their skills, potential and opportunities in modern society and learn to act based on their motivation, values and convictions, while remaining true to their beliefs.
The traits and societal impact of working in the cultural field are considered through various theories, studies and practical examples, which describe and explain the practical side of the work of cultural managers. The module addresses the use of widely discussed principles of cultural commons and the cultural ecology. The subject is largely based on the theories of sociology, ethnics, institutional art pedagogy and network theory.

- social responsibility and sustainability in the art field,
- managing societal impact of the art field (MAPSI)
- fundraising and sponsorship
- legal context; intellectual property and business law (EBS)
- current trends and future thinking Learning outcomes:
1. Has in depth overview and understanding on the specificities relating to the art’s societal impact and is able to discuss Social, economical, environmental impacts of arts and arts management in detail.
2. Understand the basic concepts of ethics as a moral philosophy, human rights with focus on the right to access to culture, and describe how human rights are reflected in the cultural managers and artists work.
3. Understand what values and how do they shape the decision making processes and guide actions in the cultural management field
3. Is aware of current ethical concerns in cultural management and society at large, understands the reasons behind them and can critically outline the implications of them
4. Is able to apply the conceptual and practical tools necessary to analyze, develop and manage activitites with societal impact.
5. Understands positive ethical practices in arts management and can apply them on a theoretical and practical level.
Assessment:
Active participation and the timely presentation of all homework, both individual and group assignments. Exact forms and timelines are announced during the semester.
The module (12 ECTS) can be considered fully completed only if each topic of the module is evaluated positively by the end of the module (3rd semester).

Excellent (A)
The student shows excellent understanding of the theories and concepts on module and its various impacts and can apply them to the context of his/her individual project. He/she provides excellent arguments and examples from practical experiences with applying theories and concepts. The student shows excellent skills in their argumentation and thinking. The student shows excellent holistic understanding of the context of the module, the theories and practicalities.
Very good (B)
The student shows good understanding of the theories and concepts on module, and its various impacts and can apply them to the context of his/her individual project. He/she provides good arguments and examples from practical experiences with applying theories and concepts. The student shows good skills in their argumentation and thinking. The student shows good holistic understanding of the context of the module, the theories and practicalities.
Good (C)
The student shows understanding of the theories and concepts on module, and various impacts and the author can apply them to the context of his/her individual project. He/she provides some arguments and examples from practical experiences with applying theories and concepts. The student provides some their argumentation and thinking. The student shows only partial understanding of the context of the module, the theories and practicalities.
Satisfactory (D)
The student shows some understanding of the theories and concepts on module, and various impacts and the author can partially apply them to the context of his/her individual project. He/she provides some arguments and examples from practical experiences with only limited linkages to relevant theories and concepts. The student shows some skills in argumentation and thinking. The student shows only very partial understanding of the context of the module, the theories and practicalities.
Sufficient (E)
The student shows little understanding of the theories and concepts of module, and various impacts and the cannot well apply them to the context of his/her individual project. He/she provides few arguments and examples from practical experiences without proper linkages to theories and concepts. The author shows little skills in their argumentation and thinking. The student shows poor understanding of the context of the course, the theories and practicalities.
Insufficient (0)
The student shows no understanding of the theories and concepts of module, and various impacts and the cannot apply them to the context of his/her individual project. He/she provides no arguments and examples from practical experiences with linkages to theories and concepts. The author shows no skills in their argumentation and thinking. The student shows very poor understanding of the context of the course, the theories and practicalities.
